1. The Main Course: Textbooks, laptop, notes
The obvious stuff, of course, is going to be the material you’re studying. You don’t want to show up at the library and realize you’ve got everything, but the reason why you’re there in the first place!
2. Write It Down: Pencil, pens, highlighters, and markers
Sure, some of us can probably borrow a pen from a friend or sneak a marker from the library. But having your own set of writing material is both sanitary and comforting to be working with your own tools.
3. Zone In: Earplugs or headphones
Maybe the library is just a bit too silent. Or maybe your friends keep chatting and you need your sound-cancelling headphones to stay in the zone. Find your Spotify playlist, make like the Lofi girl, and get to work!
4. Cross It Off: Planner or to-do list
You’ve got a list of things to get through, so don’t forget to write it down and bring it along! You don’t want anything to slip through the cracks, so take it one task at a time and enjoy the satisfaction of crossing things off your list.
5. Leave Tik-Tok Behind and Get Tick-Tocking: Timer
We all need breaks, even in a good study session when we’re churning away. Whether you follow the Pomodoro trick or use the Forest app on your phone, keeping an eye on the time can help you study healthier.
6. Get Cozy: Blanket or sweater
Is it just me, or is every single library extremely cold at night? Even classrooms or cafes can get chilly when you’ve been in there for a few hours. The last thing you want to worry about while preparing for your next exam is having to take the test with a runny nose and headache.
7. Recharge: Wires & plug-ins
It happens to every single one of us. We’re working, typing away at full speed, in the right zone when suddenly our computer screen goes dark. Maybe your headphones need recharging, or you’ve been using your phone’s calculator for the past two or three hours. Be prepared and bring your chargers along!
8. Recharge Yourself: Food and water
It’s easy to forget your physical health when you’re pulling off the equivalent of mental athletics in memorizing and studying tough material. But taking care of your body is half the battle! Bring the right snacks to keep you recharged and hydrated through the night.
Pulling off those long study nights can be tough, but taking these steps to be prepared and care for yourself goes a long way. It’s not just about scraping by and getting the work done but, rather, being at the top of your game!
